A renowned director and producer, Paul Stein has produced solo shows in New York City, Toronto, and Los Angeles. He is the Artistic Director of the Comedy Central Stage in Los Angeles, where he views and evaluates new comic talent. He was the Associate Producer of the HBO Workspace where he produced over 1500 development showcases. He was also a Talent Consultant for the HBO's Comedy Festival in Las Vegas. Two days of awesome workshops on how to take your solo show and turn it into a piece that best showcases your story and your specific gifts: this workshop will show you how to create and make decisive choices with your show... not obvious ones. Through lecture, handouts, video presentations, discussion, and an opportunity for critical analysis of your work, this two-day workshop will touch upon writing, shaping, performing and producing your unique idea. Helpful to the beginner or experienced solo performer, these workshops are for everyone from stand-up comedians to performers with more dramatic pieces. Mr. Stein's unique look at solo performance, gained from a dozen years of working with solo shows in Hollywood and at numerous festivals, will provide a perspective that cannot be missed.



INTRO TO SOLO PERFORMANCE Saturday, January 16, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

You have an idea, now how do you begin to write it? This session will include: discussions on story and structure, text analysis, and breaking down different types and genres of solo performance. There will be in-class, hands-on writing exercises by participants, as well as reading script examples and approaches from known soloists. Writing samples welcomed.
     Cost: $50
     Class size: 20 students (max)

FROM PAGE TO STAGE Saturday, January 16, 2:00 - 5:00 PM

How do you breakdown your script and adapt it to the stage? How can you make your performance dynamic? This session will include performance tips, staging techniques, and analysis with discussion & video examples on past performer and performance successes.
     Cost: $35

PRODUCING YOUR SHOW Sunday, January 17, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

How do you go about mounting and presenting your solo show? Do you have to do it all by yourself? What kind of working relationships do you want to have with a director, producer and/or publicist? This session will breakdown the business of performance & production. Discussions will include insights on industry relations, festival opportunities, benefits and drawbacks of self-producing and successful examples on past performers experiences.
     Cost: $35
     Class size: Open

YOUR WORK, REVIEWED Sunday, January 17, 2:00 - 5:00 PM

This session offers the opportunity for ten performers to present performance material in a rehearsal atmosphere for critical discussion and growth. (Performing time limits will be in place). An additional ten participants are welcomed to watch, observe the actor/director exchange and join in the dialogue.
     Cost: $50
     Class size: 10 performance slots ($50), 10 watchers slots ($10)

More about Paul Stein

Formerly, the Associate Producer of the HBO Workspace and Talent Consultant for the HBO's Comedy Festival, Paul Stein has coordinated, produced -- and seen -- hundreds of one-person shows. Currently, Mr. Stein is the Artistic Director of the Comedy Central Stage in Hollywood, a development venue sponsored by the network. As a director, Paul has staged numerous solo shows in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto, including performances at the New York International Fringe, Summer Works Theatre Festival, Toronto International Fringe and the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO. As an instructor, he enjoys teaching his solo performance workshop at various theaters in Southern California. He is a graduate of L.A.C.C. Theater Academy, Cal State University, Los Angeles; and recently completed a successful stint as Artistic Director of Moving Arts, an ensemble company dedicated to producing new plays and theatre works. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild & SDC.
